Atletico Madrid have announced the signing of South Korea international Kang In Lee from Paris Saint-Germain. The 25-year-old attacking midfielder has agreed a six-year contract with the La Liga club, keeping him at the Metropolitano until 30 June 2031.
The transfer marks a return to Spanish football for Lee, who previously represented Valencia and Real Mallorca. He joins Diego Simeone’s squad having secured the number 7 shirt, with the club confirming the deal via their official channels after reaching an agreement with the French side.
La Liga Pedigree
Lee’s connection to Spanish football stretches back to his childhood. He entered Valencia’s academy at the age of ten and made his senior debut for the club in October 2018. During his time at Mestalla, he accumulated 62 appearances before departing for Real Mallorca in August 2021.
His two-season spell on the island proved productive, featuring in 73 matches under managers Luis García Plaza and Javier Aguirre. Lee’s performances at Mallorca initially attracted Atletico’s interest, though he instead secured a move to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2023.
Paris Spell and International Credentials
During three seasons with the French champions, Lee made 124 appearances across all competitions. He contributed 16 goals and 16 assists while accumulating significant experience in European competition.
On the international stage, Lee has earned 50 caps for South Korea. He captured the Golden Ball award as the tournament’s best player when guiding the under-20 side to the 2019 World Cup final. He subsequently formed part of the under-23 squad that claimed gold at the 2023 Asian Games.
Technical Profile and Tactical Fit
Atletico have identified Lee as a left-footed creative presence capable of operating as a number ten or from either flank. The club emphasised his vision, technical ability, and capacity to distribute effectively and strike from distance.
His arrival signals a shift towards midfield profiles able to maintain possession and unlock defences in tight spaces. With the South Korean committed until 2031, Atletico appear to view him as a long-term foundation rather than a temporary solution.
Preseason will determine how Simeone integrates the playmaker into the tactical structure, and whether this recruitment prompts further adjustments in the wide or attacking midfield positions.
