Nigeria international Kevin Akpoguma is scheduled to undergo a medical with Frosinone on Wednesday ahead of signing for the newly-promoted Serie A side as a free agent. Sky Sport Italia reports that the defender has already arranged his travel to Italy and is expected to complete the formalities shortly after the examinations.
The 31-year-old, who celebrated his birthday in April, departed TSG Hoffenheim when his contract expired on June 30. His exit concluded an eleven-year association with the Bundesliga club that began in 2013, during which he established himself as a reliable squad player despite loan spells elsewhere.
This transfer represents Akpoguma’s first venture into club football outside Germany. Born in Germany, he represented the European nation at every youth level before switching his international allegiance to the Super Eagles in October 2020. He offers tactical versatility across the defensive line, capable of operating as a centre-back, right-back or left-back.
During his lengthy spell with Hoffenheim, Akpoguma accumulated 179 Bundesliga appearances, scoring three goals and registering five assists. His time with the German club also included loan periods at Fortuna Düsseldorf and Hannover 96 earlier in his career, providing him with substantial top-flight experience across different environments.
Frosinone, who secured promotion to Serie A, are actively bolstering their defensive options ahead of the new campaign. The acquisition of Akpoguma on a free transfer provides the club with a seasoned professional who has operated at the highest level of German football for the best part of a decade.
The defender reportedly views this move as crucial for his international ambitions. According to Sky Sport Italia, Akpoguma hopes that regular playing time in Serie A will strengthen his case for a recall to the Nigeria squad as they prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The tournament represents a significant target for the defender, who will hope to feature at age 33.
Having spent his entire professional career within the German football system, the switch to Italian football marks a significant career transition for the versatile defender as he seeks to maintain his physical condition and competitive edge entering the latter stages of his playing career.
