Napoli are very close to agreeing a deal to send Jesper Lindstrom to Schalke 04 on loan. The move would hand the Denmark international yet another opportunity to revive his career away from Serie A.
This will mark Lindstrom’s third temporary spell away from the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona since his high-profile arrival in the summer of 2023. Napoli invested €30 million plus add-ons to sign the attacking midfielder from Eintracht Frankfurt, banking on his creativity and pace to bolster their attacking options after he impressed in the Bundesliga.
Goalless drought in Naples
The transfer quickly turned sour. Across 29 competitive appearances during his debut season, Lindstrom failed to contribute a single goal or assist. The 24-year-old struggled to adapt to the tactical rigours of Italian football, finding himself increasingly marginalised as the campaign progressed and unable to replicate the form that had made him one of the most promising talents in Germany.
Seeking to salvage value from their substantial investment, Napoli sanctioned a loan to Everton in the Premier League during the 2023-24 campaign. When that spell failed to yield a permanent transfer, Lindstrom returned to German football with Wolfsburg for the second half of last season. Neither club moved to sign the winger permanently, leaving Napoli with limited options beyond arranging further temporary stays elsewhere.
Long-term contract complicates exit
This pattern of loan moves presents a tricky situation for Napoli. Lindstrom remains under contract until June 2028, meaning the club cannot simply wait for his deal to expire. They must either find a buyer willing to shoulder his wages and recoup part of the €30 million outlay, or continue subsidising his salary on loan in the hope that regular football finally restores his market value.
It remains unclear whether the Schalke agreement will include an option to make the transfer permanent. Napoli will hope that a change of scenery in Germany proves more successful than his previous stops, potentially paving the way for a permanent exit from a move that has so far delivered no goals, no assists, and no return on their significant investment.
