Germany captain Joshua Kimmich has described his side’s defeat to Ecuador as a “deserved loss” following the conclusion of their Group E campaign in New Jersey. The result, which ended the group stage on a disappointing note for Die Mannschaft, drew frank assessments from senior players who acknowledged their opponents’ superior intensity and commitment throughout the ninety minutes.

Kimmich did not mince words when analysing the performance. Speaking in the mixed zone after the final whistle, he conceded that Germany had contributed to their own downfall through careless possession during the second half. The skipper warned that the team cannot afford another setback as they turn their attention to the knockout phase, stressing that the standard required at this tournament demands complete focus from the opening minute.

Ecuador’s hunger evident

Striker Deniz Undav offered a blunt appraisal of the contest, suggesting that Ecuador displayed greater desire throughout the fixture in New Jersey. He observed that the South American side approached the match with everything at stake, contrasting their urgency with Germany’s struggles to impose themselves on the game and maintain control.

Undav explained that he felt Ecuador “wanted it more” than Germany, adding that the South Americans approached the fixture with greater intensity. He noted that Germany’s tactical approach failed to function properly while their opponents committed fully to every challenge and fifty-fifty duel across the pitch.

Jamal Musiala echoed these sentiments, pointing to Ecuador’s physical approach as a decisive factor in the outcome. The attacking midfielder highlighted the “very high aggression” maintained by the opposition from start to finish, noting that Ecuador were “simply hungrier to win today” and backed up their intensity with effective pressing.

Round of 32 focus

Despite the group stage defeat, Germany advance to the Round of 32, where the margin for error will vanish completely. Musiala emphasised the shift in mentality required for the decisive phase, declaring that the team “have to win the next games” to progress further in the competition.

The defeat serves as a wake-up call for the squad following their progression from Group E. With elimination a possibility in every remaining fixture, Kimmich and his teammates will need to address the lapses in concentration and intensity that proved costly against Ecuador if they are to extend their stay in the tournament and fulfil their potential in the knockout rounds.
