Former Germany international Lewis Holtby has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35. The midfielder revealed the decision on Tuesday, bringing the curtain down on a career spanning nearly two decades.
Holtby last featured for Eredivisie club NAC Breda, where he played regularly following his final Bundesliga stint with Holstein Kiel. The announcement marks the end of a journey that saw him represent clubs across four different leagues and accumulate significant experience in both the Bundesliga and English football.
Bundesliga Roots and Breakthrough
Holtby first made his mark in the Bundesliga under Thomas Tuchel at Mainz during the 2010/11 season. The central midfielder went on to represent several German clubs including Schalke, Bochum and Hamburg, building a solid reputation in the top flight.
Across his Bundesliga career, Holtby made 225 appearances and found the net 26 times. He also featured in over 100 matches in the 2. Bundesliga with three different clubs. His most celebrated moment in German football came with Schalke in 2012, when they overcame rivals Borussia Dortmund to win the German Supercup.
Spells in England and Return
Holtby’s career also took him to the Premier League and Championship in England. He played for Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham and Blackburn Rovers, adapting to the physical demands of English football before eventually returning to Germany and later moving to the Netherlands.
International Career and Future Plans
On the international stage, Holtby earned three senior caps for Germany. His solitary competitive appearance came as a late substitute in a 3-1 Euro 2012 qualifying victory over Azerbaijan. Earlier in his development, he claimed the Fritz Walter gold medal at U19 level in 2009.
In a statement posted on Instagram, Holtby said: “It’s time to say goodbye. After almost 20 years as a pro, my active career ends today. I leave the pitch with pride, humility, and endless gratitude. But one thing is certain: I will never turn my back on soccer. This game will always be a part of me, and I’m looking forward to what’s next.”
The Erkelenz native leaves the professional game having fulfilled a career that included top-flight football in three countries and international recognition, though he has indicated he will remain involved in the sport beyond his playing days.
