Lille OSC are in advanced negotiations with Sevilla FC over the transfer of centre-back Tanguy Nianzou, with discussions between the French and Spanish clubs progressing rapidly, according to Foot Mercato.

The Ligue 1 side are positioned to capitalise on Sevilla’s significant financial difficulties, which have forced the Andalusian club to consider offloading players to reduce their wage bill. Despite Nianzou being contracted to Sevilla until 2027, the club are reportedly not demanding a substantial fee for the 24-year-old, making the transfer economically viable for Lille.

Financial pressures force Sevilla’s hand

Sevilla face serious monetary constraints that necessitate immediate squad trimming to balance the books. The sale of Nianzou would provide crucial relief to the club’s finances while removing a significant salary from their wage structure. With the player tied to a long-term contract until 2027, the club would typically command a premium, but their current economic situation has forced them to adopt a more flexible stance regarding the transfer fee.

Career interrupted by fitness setbacks

Nianzou developed through the Paris Saint-Germain academy before joining Bayern Munich in 2020 on a free transfer after his contract expired. However, his time in Germany was severely disrupted by physical setbacks, limiting him to just 28 appearances across all competitions during his two-year spell, in which he scored one goal and provided one assist.

The French defender moved to Sevilla in 2022 seeking to rekindle his career, but fitness issues continued to hamper his progress. Over four seasons in Spain, he managed only 62 appearances, failing to establish the consistent availability required at the highest level. These persistent injury problems have prevented the centre-back from fulfilling the potential he showed during his development in Paris.

Should the transfer to Lille materialise, it would represent a fresh start for the Paris-born defender in his home country, offering him the chance to rebuild his career in familiar surroundings. However, any prospective club will need to assess whether he can finally overcome his injury record to deliver regular performances in a demanding Ligue 1 campaign.
