Openda Reflects on Challenging Juventus Spell
Belgium international Lois Openda has opened up about his time at Juventus, asserting that his move to the Turin club in 2025 was not a mistake, despite a challenging single season. Openda, currently on loan at French side Lyon, shared his thoughts with L’Equipe, as reported by Gazzetta.
During his 2025-26 campaign with Juventus, Openda made 34 appearances across all competitions but managed to score only one goal. He played under two coaches, Igor Tudor and Luciano Spalletti, during his stint at the Allianz Stadium.
Openda explained some of the difficulties he faced, noting that the team’s playing style did not always suit his strengths. He mentioned that while he had good chemistry with fellow forward Jonathan David, Dusan Vlahovic often preferred to retain possession. Openda also highlighted that the team was not accustomed to utilising a player who makes runs in behind defenders, a style he believes is better exploited by teams like Inter Milan in Serie A.
Despite the limited on-field success, Openda maintains a positive outlook on his time in Italy. He stated, “It wasn’t a mistake, and it allowed me to work on aspects I hadn’t considered.” He added, “I knew exactly what I was getting into, and I’m sure that in other circumstances, it would have gone better.” Towards the end of the season, he realised that a departure was necessary to secure more playing time.
Current Loan at Lyon and Future Outlook
For the 2026-27 season, Openda made a loan move to Lyon, with the French club paying €3.5 million for his temporary services. Crucially, the loan agreement does not include an option for Lyon to make the transfer permanent, meaning Openda is expected to return to Juventus at the end of the current campaign.
Since joining Lyon, the 26-year-old forward has shown improved form, scoring two goals in eight appearances so far this season. His current performances suggest he is finding his rhythm in France, but his long-term future remains tied to Juventus, pending any further transfer developments after his loan spell concludes.
