Lyon challenge Nice for Amoura signature
Olympique Lyonnais have made a late attempt to sign VfL Wolfsburg winger Mohamed Amoura, disrupting OGC Nice‘s efforts to secure the Algeria international. The 26-year-old had reportedly been close to joining Nice on loan with an option to buy, but Lyon have emerged as determined rivals for his services.
The competition between the Ligue 1 clubs creates a complex situation for Wolfsburg. The Bundesliga side invested nearly €15 million to sign Amoura from Belgian outfit Union Saint-Gilloise last summer and tied him to a contract running until 2029. This long-term agreement strengthens their negotiating position as they field enquiries from multiple parties.
Multiple clubs monitoring situation
Amoura is not short of potential destinations. Beyond Lyon and Nice, Stade Rennais have also shown interest in recent days, while Italian club Udinese have tracked developments as they seek attacking reinforcements. This surge of attention follows a solid debut season in Germany where Amoura scored eight goals and provided four assists in 33 appearances across all competitions.
His international experience adds further appeal. Amoura has earned 47 caps for Algeria and remains a key figure in their national squad setup, offering prospective clubs a player with proven pedigree at international level.
What happens next
Nice had reportedly advanced furthest in negotiations and believed they were nearing an agreement for a temporary switch. Lyon intervention has changed the dynamic entirely, forcing all parties to reassess their positions.
Wolfsburg must now decide whether to prioritise a loan deal that keeps Amoura in their long-term plans or push for an immediate permanent transfer that recoups their investment. With four years remaining on his contract, they face no immediate pressure to sell unless the financial terms prove irresistible.
The coming days will likely determine whether Amoura remains in Germany or returns to France, with Lyon and Nice now leading the chase for his signature.
