Olympique Lyonnais are reportedly weighing up a move for Derby County goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström as a contingency plan should one of their current shot-stoppers depart this summer.
According to Foot Mercato, the Ligue 1 club have identified the 28-year-old Swede as a target if either Dominik Greif or Rémy Descamps leaves. However, the report indicates that such a scenario is not presently on the agenda at the Groupama Stadium, meaning any approach remains speculative.
Established in the Championship
Widell Zetterström joined Derby from Swedish side Djurgårdens IF in the summer of 2024 and has since cemented his status as the Rams’ undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. He holds a contract with the East Midlands club until 2027.
During his debut campaign in English football, the Stockholm-born keeper made 42 appearances across all competitions, keeping nine clean sheets whilst conceding 51 goals. He followed this with 33 starts in the 2025-26 season, managing seven shut-outs despite spending several weeks on the sidelines through injury.
International Pedigree
The goalkeeper has also established himself on the international stage. He earned a starting berth for Sweden at the 2026 World Cup, featuring in their round of 16 defeat to France.
Transfer Situation
Whilst Lyon find Widell Zetterström’s profile appealing, any potential transfer remains dependent on outgoings from their current squad. With two years remaining on his Derby contract, the Championship club would be under no immediate pressure to sell their established number one unless a substantial offer materialises.
The situation places Widell Zetterström in a strong position. Having adapted successfully to English football, he can continue as Derby’s first-choice whilst Lyon assess whether their current goalkeepers depart before making any concrete approach.
