RB Leipzig‘s managing director for sport, Marcel Schäfer, has provided insight into the club’s decision to sell winger Yan Diomande to Real Madrid in a record-breaking transfer. Schäfer explained that the move, which saw Diomande depart for a guaranteed fee of €125 million, potentially rising to €140 million with add-ons, was an “economic necessity” for the Bundesliga side.
The transfer of the 19-year-old Côte d’Ivoire international became RB Leipzig’s most expensive sale to date, surpassing the €90 million received from Manchester City for Josko Gvardiol in 2023. Schäfer emphasised that generating transfer revenues is a crucial part of RB Leipzig’s financial model, stating the club “needs to sell players every single summer.”
Diomande’s Desire and Leipzig’s Strategy
Beyond the financial imperative, Schäfer also acknowledged Yan Diomande’s strong desire to make the switch to the Spanish giants. “If Real Madrid are coming, it’s difficult,” Schäfer admitted, highlighting the challenge of blocking a player’s “life dream.” He noted that considering the player’s perspective was also a factor in the club’s decision-making process.
Diomande had only joined RB Leipzig a year prior, arriving from CD Leganés for a fee of €20 million. His rapid development and subsequent record sale to Real Madrid underscore Leipzig’s strategy of identifying and nurturing young talent before selling them on for significant profits. Schäfer described the transfer as an “outstanding story” for the club, demonstrating their ability to invest in potential rather than just proven performance.
The substantial fee received for Diomande ensures RB Leipzig can continue to reinvest in their squad and maintain their competitive edge in the Bundesliga and European competitions, while also fulfilling their economic requirements.
