Mason Greenwood is reportedly heading to Istanbul to undergo a medical with Fenerbahce, as the Turkish side close in on a permanent transfer from Olympique Marseille. The development would end weeks of speculation linking the forward with returns to Italy or Spain.
Multiple sources indicate that Fenerbahce have reached a comprehensive agreement with the Ligue 1 club and finalised personal terms with the 23-year-old. The proposed contract is understood to be worth up to €9 million per season, representing a significant improvement on his current wages in France.
Conflicting Reports on Fee Structure
The precise transfer fee remains a matter of dispute between Italian and Turkish media. Italian outlets value the deal at approximately €45 million plus performance-related bonuses. Conversely, Fanatik in Turkey reports a base fee of €39.5 million with add-ons, including a substantial payment contingent on Fenerbahce winning the domestic championship.
Uncertainty also surrounds the sell-on clauses benefiting Greenwood’s former clubs. One report suggests Manchester United are entitled to 40 per cent of any profit generated from this sale. However, alternative claims from Sport Mediaset indicate a 30 per cent share for United, with an additional 10 per cent owed to Getafe.
Roma and Atletico Madrid Miss Out
Roma had made Greenwood their priority target to strengthen the left flank and reportedly prepared a package valued close to €50 million. Despite their efforts, Fenerbahce’s direct approach to the player and superior salary offer proved decisive.
Atletico Madrid also emerged with late interest in the forward, but the Turkish club’s advanced negotiations left little room for the Spanish side to intervene.
Greenwood’s departure would see Marseille receive a substantial fee just twelve months after acquiring the player from Manchester United. For Fenerbahce, the signing represents a major addition as they seek to strengthen their squad for domestic and European competitions. The medical examination in Istanbul is expected to constitute the final step before the transfer is formally ratified.
