Lazio are on the verge of completing the signing of Croatian centre-back Josip Sutalo from Ajax, with multiple reports indicating an agreement has been reached between the clubs. The 26-year-old is expected to join the Serie A side on an initial loan deal that includes an option to make the transfer permanent.

Deal Structure

According to transfer specialist Alfredo Pedullà, the arrangement involves a paid loan fee of €2.5 million, with an option to buy set at between €8 million and €9 million. However, Sky Sport Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio offers a slightly different version, suggesting the loan fee stands at €3 million and that the purchase option could become an obligation if specific conditions are met during the season.

Should the transfer be completed, the total package could reach approximately €12 million. Sutalo has reportedly already agreed to a four-year contract at the Stadio Olimpico, having turned down more lucrative proposals from the Saudi Pro League in favour of remaining in European football.

Player Profile and Ajax Career

Sutalo joined Ajax from Dinamo Zagreb in the summer of 2023 for a fee of €20.5 million, representing a significant investment for the Dutch club. Despite suffering from recurring injury problems during his two-year spell in Amsterdam, he managed to make 108 competitive appearances across all competitions.

The defender has also established himself at international level, representing Croatia at the 2026 World Cup. His experience in both the Eredivisie and international tournaments is expected to bolster Lazio’s defensive options as they compete on multiple fronts this season.

What Happens Next

While the framework of the deal appears to be in place, the transfer remains subject to final confirmation from both clubs and the completion of a medical examination. The discrepancy between the reported loan fees suggests some details are still being finalised, though all sources indicate the move is in its advanced stages.

If completed, Sutalo’s arrival would mark a significant piece of business for Lazio, securing a player who commanded a substantially higher fee just two years ago while avoiding a major initial outlay through the loan structure.
