AC Milan have reportedly revived their pursuit of Lazio defender Mario Gila, adding further competition to an already crowded race for the Spain international. The centre-back has entered the final year of his contract in Rome and looks increasingly likely to depart before the transfer window closes.

Milan are back in contention for the 25-year-old, who turns 26 next month. Their interest is not new, but has gained fresh momentum as they monitor developments across Serie A. Napoli have been the most determined suitors so far, with incoming manager Max Allegri specifically identifying Gila as a defensive target. However, the Partenopei cannot complete the signing until they first sell another player.

Atalanta remain serious contenders, offering Gila the chance to reunite with former Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri. Inter Milan are also searching for defensive reinforcements and have registered their interest in the former Real Madrid prospect.

Valuation and contractual hurdles

Lazio are holding out for more than €20 million despite the player’s contract expiring next summer. The valuation reflects a financial obligation to Real Madrid, who retain a sell-on clause from Gila’s €6 million move to the Italian capital in 2022. The Biancocelesti must share a portion of any future fee with the Spanish giants, reducing their net gain from a sale.

With extension talks reportedly non-existent, an exit appears inevitable. The club face a choice between securing a substantial transfer fee now or risking the departure of a valuable asset on a free transfer in 12 months.

The road ahead

The situation remains fluid as multiple clubs circle. Napoli’s ability to act depends on outgoing transfers, while Milan’s entry into the race could accelerate negotiations or inflate the asking price further. Atalanta and Inter continue to monitor proceedings, waiting for the right moment to formalise their approaches.

Gila has established himself as a capable Serie A defender since leaving Madrid two years ago. His next move will likely determine whether he becomes a first-choice option at a top club or continues to compete for minutes in a rotated squad.
