AC Milan have officially completed the signing of Portuguese striker Gonçalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth nearly €70 million. The club confirmed the transfer this week, marking a significant statement of intent from the Serie A giants.

Ramos, who is currently representing Portugal at the 2026 World Cup, will arrive in late July or early August. His acquisition addresses Milan’s need for firepower up front, but sporting director Zlatan Ibrahimovic is already prioritising the next phase of squad reconstruction.

Defensive priorities

With the attack bolstered, Milan have turned their attention to securing a new centre-back. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has emerged as a “dream” target for the Rossoneri hierarchy.

The Netherlands international is entering the final year of his contract at Anfield and will turn 35 next week. Reports indicate that Milan owner Gerry Cardinale and the club’s RedBird ownership group are evaluating a potential approach for the experienced defender. However, Liverpool are expected to resist any attempt to sign their captain, particularly given the likely departure of centre-back partner Ibrahima Konaté.

The realistic alternative

A transfer for Sporting CP’s Gonçalo Inácio is considered significantly more achievable. The 25-year-old Portugal international carries an estimated price tag of between €30 million and €40 million.

Inácio offers an additional advantage through his familiarity with Milan’s current head coach, having previously played under him during their time together at Sporting. This existing relationship could prove crucial in negotiations.

Like Ramos, Inácio is currently occupied with World Cup duties in North America, which may delay any imminent developments until the tournament concludes.

Financial context

The outlay for Ramos represents a major investment for Milan, leaving limited room for additional extravagant spending. While Van Dijk’s experience and leadership would provide immediate quality, his age and Liverpool’s reluctance to sell make the deal complex.

Inácio represents a younger, more affordable option who fits the profile of a long-term defensive solution. The coming weeks will determine whether Milan pursue the ambitious Liverpool move or secure the more attainable Portuguese defender.
