Milan are pursuing two midfield reinforcements this summer as new coach Ruben Amorim shapes his squad for the 2026-27 season, with the club registering interest in Genk’s Konstantinos Karetsas and Marseille’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The Italian side face stiff competition for Karetsas, however. Borussia Dortmund have already had an opening bid of €25 million rejected by the Belgian club, who are demanding at least €35m for the Greece international. Multiple sources in Italy indicate that Milan are currently in talks with the player’s representatives, though they have not yet submitted an offer to Genk.

Karetsas bidding war heats up

Karetsas has emerged as a primary target for the attacking midfield role at San Siro. The 19-year-old has attracted attention from several major European clubs, but Dortmund appear furthest along in negotiations despite their initial offer falling short of Genk’s valuation.

Milan’s sporting director is working to position the club at the forefront of the race, though the significant gap between Dortmund’s rejected bid and Genk’s asking price suggests any successful offer will need to approach the €35m mark.

Hojbjerg monitored as Amorim assesses options

Alongside their pursuit of Karetsas, Milan are tracking former Tottenham midfielder Hojbjerg, who is currently with Marseille. According to reports from Italy, the Denmark international is available for transfer this window.

However, Milan are adopting a patient approach regarding the 29-year-old. Amorim, who recently took charge of the club, wishes to evaluate his existing squad during pre-season before committing to additional signings beyond the two arrivals already secured.

The club has already completed the acquisitions of Gonçalo Ramos and Mario Gila earlier this summer, providing the new manager with fresh options in attack and defence.

What happens next

Milan must decide whether to formalise their interest in Karetsas with a concrete offer that meets Genk’s demands, or risk losing the player to Dortmund, who may return with an improved bid. For Hojbjerg, any movement depends on Amorim’s assessment of the current midfield options during training sessions and early friendly matches.

The coming weeks will determine whether Milan can fend off German competition for the young Greek playmaker while potentially adding experienced Premier League quality in Hojbjerg to their renovated squad.
