Napoli are negotiating with Chelsea to sign defender Benoît Badiashile, yet a significant gap between the clubs over the transfer structure is blocking progress. The Serie A side want to take the 25-year-old on loan with an option to buy, whereas Chelsea are demanding a permanent deal worth €30 million.
Multiple sources confirm that Napoli face strict transfer limitations this summer and cannot register new signings without first generating funds through player sales. This financial constraint makes the loan formula essential for the Italian club, yet Chelsea are currently unwilling to accept those terms. The London side paid €38 million to sign Badiashile from AS Monaco in January 2023 and are reluctant to take a substantial loss without securing an immediate permanent sale.
Limited role under Alonso
Badiashile appears unlikely to feature in manager Xabi Alonso’s plans for the upcoming season. The French centre-back made just 16 appearances last season, starting only 11 matches, as muscular injuries disrupted his campaign. He has made 71 total appearances for the Blues, scoring twice and providing one assist.
The lack of playing time has pushed the defender to the margins at Stamford Bridge. Despite his reduced status, Chelsea are holding firm on their €30 million valuation, which represents an €8 million markdown on the original fee paid to Monaco approximately 18 months ago.
Obstacles and alternatives
Sources suggest that Badiashile’s history of muscular injuries presents an additional concern for Napoli, who struggled with similar fitness problems among their squad last season. This factor, combined with the club’s financial restrictions, leaves the negotiations at a standstill despite continued dialogue between the parties.
Real Sociedad have also approached Badiashile and are monitoring developments, though with less urgency than their Italian rivals. The Basque club could emerge as an alternative should Napoli fail to resolve their budget constraints or reach a compromise with Chelsea.
With the transfer window progressing, Badiashile faces an uncertain future. Unless Napoli can complete player sales to fund a permanent move, or Chelsea relax their opposition to a loan arrangement, the defender may remain in London despite sitting outside the first-team plans.
