Napoli explore loan option
Napoli are exploring a loan deal for Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile as they seek cover for an injury-hit back line. The Premier League club have reportedly become open to allowing the 25-year-old to leave on a temporary basis after initially hesitating when the Italian side first made an approach.
Defensive injury crisis
The Serie A side face a shortage of fit centre-backs following a serious injury to Alessandro Buongiorno. The Italy international underwent meniscus surgery on his knee and faces between two and three months on the sidelines. Sam Beukema is also not fully fit, leaving new manager Max Allegri with limited options ahead of the campaign.
Chelsea stance softens
Badiashile moved to Stamford Bridge from Monaco in January 2023 in a deal worth €38 million. He committed to a long-term contract running until June 2030 but has struggled to make an impact in West London. The defender managed just 16 competitive appearances last season and fell out of favour entirely during the final six months of the campaign, failing to feature regularly in the matchday squad.
Chelsea’s willingness to sanction a loan may depend on their own recruitment plans. The club are monitoring Maxence Lacroix of Crystal Palace, with suggestions that Axel Disasi could move in the opposite direction as part of the arrangement. Should those deals progress, Badiashile would face even greater competition for places, making a temporary departure more logical for all parties.
Transfer status
Napoli had already made an approach to ask about Badiashile but stressed they would only proceed with a loan move rather than a permanent transfer. With Chelsea now reportedly receptive to that structure, discussions between the clubs could advance as Allegri looks to shore up his defensive options.
