Napoli are targeting Juventus defender Federico Gatti as one of the first signings for incoming coach Massimiliano Allegri, with the Turin club setting an asking price of approximately €20 million.
Allegri seeks reunion
The potential transfer is driven by Allegri’s specific request to work again with the 26-year-old. The pair collaborated during Allegri’s previous spell at Juventus, and the coach is understood to value Gatti’s qualities as he prepares to rebuild Napoli’s squad.
However, the deal cannot advance until Allegri’s own situation is resolved. His appointment at Napoli remains unofficial pending the settlement of a contract dispute with Milan. Only once this severance agreement is finalised can Napoli formally confirm their new manager and authorise the recruitment of his primary targets.
Juventus stance and Gatti’s position
Juventus are willing to sanction Gatti’s departure for a fee in the region of €20 million. This figure would generate a significant profit for the club, who originally signed the defender from Frosinone.
The Italy international’s exit has been anticipated for several months. National team manager Luciano Spalletti has consistently looked beyond Gatti when selecting his defensive personnel, while Juventus plan to add further centre-back reinforcements this summer. These developments have left Gatti facing reduced opportunities for regular football in Turin.
A move to Naples would offer Gatti the prospect of working under a coach who knows his game intimately, alongside the guarantee of greater involvement in the first team.
Transfer status
The pursuit of Gatti illustrates the contingent nature of Napoli’s summer business. Until Allegri’s appointment is ratified, the club cannot advance negotiations for the defender or other identified targets.
Should the contractual issues be resolved swiftly, Napoli will look to conclude the €20 million deal quickly to secure Allegri’s preferred defensive option ahead of the new season.
