AS Roma have reportedly submitted an opening offer of €5 million to Club América for Mexico international defender Israel Reyes. The 26-year-old has emerged as a target as the Serie A side look to fill a sudden vacancy at right-back.

Roma Table Opening Bid

The Giallorossi are working to reinforce their defensive ranks following the loss of Zeki Celik, who departed for Juventus on a free transfer. Reports indicate that Roma have formally proposed €5m for Reyes, though this initial bid remains below the Mexican club’s expectations.

Reyes currently plays for Club América and possesses a contract that extends until December 2028. The Liga MX outfit are reportedly seeking between €6m and €7m to part with the versatile defender, who has earned 38 senior caps for Mexico.

The Right-Back Dilemma

Roma’s search for defensive reinforcements has taken on greater urgency following Celik’s surprise switch to Turin. The Turkey international had appeared set to renew his deal in the Italian capital after his previous contract expired, only to complete a move to the Bianconeri instead.

Reyes offers flexibility across multiple positions, including right-back, centre-back and defensive midfield. This adaptability makes him an attractive prospect for manager Claudio Ranieri as he looks to shore up his backline.

Alternative Targets

Should the negotiations for Reyes fail to progress, Roma have identified other potential recruits. Sporting CP’s Ivan Fresneda remains on their radar, though the Spaniard would cost considerably more than the Mexican international following his €9m move to Portugal in 2023. Real Madrid have also been linked with Fresneda.

Rafik Belghali of Hellas Verona was previously monitored by Roma’s scouting department, but the defender now appears poised to join Olympique Marseille.

The Serie A club must now decide whether to increase their offer for Reyes or pursue one of the more expensive alternatives before the transfer window closes.
