Napoli have completed the permanent signing of Rasmus Hojlund from Manchester United for €44 million this summer, with manager Massimiliano Allegri immediately challenging the 23-year-old striker to score at least 20 Serie A goals this season.

Record outlay

The Denmark international initially joined the Partenopei on a €6 million loan last August after an injury to Romelu Lukaku forced president Aurelio De Laurentiis into the market. Allegri had already tracked Hojlund closely during his time at Milan the previous summer, and the move materialised rapidly once the opportunity arose.

The combined €50 million outlay makes Hojlund the most expensive forward Napoli have signed under De Laurentiis, eclipsing the fees paid for high-profile predecessors including Victor Osimhen, Hirving Lozano and Gonzalo Higuain.

Immediate impact

Hojlund justified the club’s faith during his debut campaign, adapting swiftly to Italian football. He won a penalty on his fifth appearance and opened his goal account on his 14th outing, with his most decisive spell arriving around the Christmas period. During that run, he scored a brace against Juventus in Serie A and delivered a standout performance in the Supercoppa semi-final victory over Milan.

The striker also proved his worth in continental competition, netting twice against Sporting and once against Chelsea in the Champions League. Seven of his domestic goals came away from the Diego Maradona Stadium, demonstrating his ability to perform in hostile environments.

Elite expectations

Now tied to the club on a permanent basis, Hojlund faces heightened expectations. Allegri regards the 20-goal threshold as the minimum benchmark for the campaign ahead, believing the Danish forward possesses the capacity to transition from promising newcomer to prolific marksman in his first full season in Naples.

The target represents a significant step up from his previous output and reflects Napoli’s belief that their record investment can deliver a genuinely elite scoring bracket in Italian football.
