1.FC Heidenheim have confirmed that midfielder Niklas Dorsch has completed his transfer to Toronto FC. The 28-year-old has moved to Major League Soccer after expressing his desire to leave the German Bundesliga side for the Canadian club.
The agreement between Heidenheim and Toronto was reached during the German club’s pre-season training camp in Natz-Schabs, South Tyrol. The deal was formally announced this afternoon, bringing an end to Dorsch’s two-year spell with the first-team squad.
Head coach Frank Schmidt admitted the departure comes as a disappointment given the midfielder’s importance to the team. “Of course, it’s a shame that ‘Dorschi’ is leaving us, as he was planned to be a key performer and leader next season,” Schmidt said. “On the other hand, we were always aware that there could still be personnel changes this summer.”
Schmidt paid tribute to the contribution Dorsch made during his time at the club. “It was another two great years with ‘Dorschi,’ in which he contributed a great deal to our team,” he added.
Despite losing a player who was expected to play a central role in the upcoming campaign, Schmidt remains optimistic about the squad’s prospects. He indicated that the club has sufficient depth to handle the transfer without disrupting their pre-season plans.
“Our goal of having a good start to the season remains unchanged,” Schmidt stated. “However, as we have several players in his position who we believe are capable of compensating for his departure.”
The move to Toronto represents a significant change for the German midfielder, who leaves behind top-flight football in Germany for a new challenge in North America. Toronto FC will hope his experience in European football can strengthen their midfield unit as they compete in the MLS campaign.
