Former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud is preparing for an emotional return to the Emirates Stadium as Lille OSC are set to face the Gunners in the UEFA Champions League. The 40-year-old forward has indicated that this season will most likely be his last as a professional player, adding a poignant layer to his upcoming reunion.

Giroud, who recently celebrated his 40th birthday, expressed his anticipation for the match. Speaking to LOSC’s official channels, he said, “It will be full of emotion. Every time that I go back there, it is a real pleasure and I am so happy to be able to return with Lille for my last year.”

The Frenchman spent six years at Arsenal, joining from Montpellier HSC in 2012 and departing in 2018. During his time with the North London club, he made 253 appearances and scored 105 goals, becoming a significant figure for the Gunners.

The Champions League encounter will also see Giroud reunite with Mikel Arteta, who was a teammate during Giroud’s early years at Arsenal. Giroud acknowledged Arteta’s impact, stating, “It is huge to see Mikel Arteta again, with whom I played when I arrived at Arsenal. He is doing incredible work.”

Looking ahead to the challenge, Giroud added, “It will be very hard on Tuesday. We have to really believe in our chances and play with freedom, without asking ourselves questions.”

After leaving Arsenal, Giroud continued his career with spells at Chelsea, AC Milan, and LAFC before returning to his native France with Lille in 2025. This Champions League fixture marks another notable moment in what he expects to be his farewell tour in professional football.
