Rafael Leao is facing significant criticism at Turkish club Galatasaray, just weeks after his high-profile transfer from AC Milan. The early scrutiny echoes the challenges he encountered during his seven-year tenure in Italy, where he often struggled with consistency despite flashes of brilliance.
The Portuguese forward, who joined Galatasaray for €38 million plus add-ons and a 20% sell-on fee, has made four competitive appearances for his new club. However, he is yet to register a goal or an assist, leading to questions about his impact.
Performance Under Scrutiny
Leao’s performance in Galatasaray’s recent 4-0 defeat to Trabzonspor drew particular attention. During the match, he lost possession 21 times, a statistic that fuelled complaints from fans and pundits regarding his perceived lack of intensity and aggression on the pitch.
Former AC Milan player Filippo Galli commented on Leao’s career trajectory, suggesting that his talent might have reached its ceiling. “Rafael Leao had his time at Milan and it came to a natural conclusion,” Galli told Radio anch’io sport. “He is a talented player, but he was content with being that and was never the leader that he could’ve been. Perhaps his talent doesn’t go beyond that level, so it’s right that his path and that of Milan should separate.”
Pundits Weigh In
The criticism extended beyond Italy, with CBS Sports Golazo pundit Mike Lahoud also weighing in on Leao’s display against Trabzonspor. “Rafael Leao epitomised the lack of passion,” Lahoud stated. He further questioned the player’s commitment, adding, “How much does he make again, €288,000 a week? To put in that sort of performance is unacceptable. This is a big club. This isn’t a small club, and it just seems like he’s sitting there on vacation.”
Lahoud highlighted that Leao was “completely outplayed by a 22-year-old Portuguese Under-21 international in Noah Saviolo” during the match. He concluded with a stark warning: “He needs to wake up a bit, because football can be very unforgiving, and this can be one of his last chances to revitalise his career.”
The recurring nature of these criticisms presents a significant challenge for Leao as he attempts to establish himself in the Turkish Super Lig. His ability to adapt and demonstrate consistent high-level performances will be crucial in silencing his detractors and proving his worth to Galatasaray.
