Portuguese defender Raphaël Guerreiro is exploring a free transfer to AC Milan following his departure from Bayern Munich, according to Italian outlet Tuttosport.

The 32-year-old left-back ended his two-year spell at Bayern this summer after winning the Bundesliga title in consecutive seasons. He now appears set to continue his career in Serie A, with the seven-time European champions identifying him as a potential replacement for Pervis Estupiñán.

Guerreiro spent the majority of the past decade in Germany, establishing himself as a key figure at Borussia Dortmund before crossing the divide to join rivals Bayern in 2023. During his time at Dortmund, he missed out on the Meisterschale in his final appearance for the club, though he had previously lifted the European Championship trophy with Portugal in 2016.

Competition for signature

AC Milan face competition for the versatile defender’s signature. Bayer Leverkusen were heavily linked with Guerreiro at the end of last month, while Atlético Madrid had also been considered potential suitors before opting to sign Alejandro Grimaldo from Leverkusen instead.

Earlier reports suggested the French-born defender was contemplating retirement due to persistent injury problems, but Guerreiro is now actively examining options to join another club without a transfer fee attached.

Tactical fit

With Estupiñán’s future at San Siro uncertain, Milan view the experienced Portugal international as a cost-effective solution to bolster their defensive options. Guerreiro’s ability to operate across multiple positions in both defence and midfield adds further appeal to his availability on a free transfer.

The defender’s pedigree at both domestic and international level—capped by that Euro 2016 triumph in France—offers Stefano Pioli’s side a proven option as they prepare for the demands of the new campaign.

Any move would represent a fresh chapter for Guerreiro after ten years in the Bundesliga, offering him the chance to test himself in one of Europe’s other major leagues without the financial barrier of a transfer fee.
