New Signing Features in Narrow Defeat

Andrey Santos made his first Manchester United appearance as the Premier League side began their pre-season schedule with a 1-0 defeat to Wrexham in Helsinki. The Brazilian midfielder, who became United’s initial summer recruit after joining from Chelsea for £48 million, started alongside Mason Mount but could not prevent Sam Smith’s first-half strike from deciding the friendly contest.

Michael Carrick managed United for the fixture, selecting a strong starting XI in front of 20,000 spectators. Santos operated at the base of midfield during the opening 45 minutes, demonstrating a good range of passing and winning several duels. Prior to kick-off, Carrick praised the 22-year-old’s rapid adaptation, stating: “He’s a fantastic character. He’s settled in so quickly and he’s buzzing to be here.”

Smith Strikes for Welsh Side

Wrexham, contesting only their second pre-season fixture following last weekend’s meeting with Wisla Krakow, appeared the sharper outfit during the first period. Smith broke the deadlock six minutes before the interval, tapping home after Lewis O’Brien’s cross appeared to travel through Harry Maguire’s legs.

The goalscorer had nearly registered at the opposite end moments earlier, heading against his own crossbar while attempting to clear a corner. United’s best opportunity of the half fell to Joshua Zirkzee, who fired wide in the 24th minute.

Academy Products Face Experienced Heads

Carrick replaced his entire starting line-up at half-time, fielding a side composed entirely of academy products for the second period. Only Wrexham defender Aaron James remained on the pitch from the original 22 starters, with experienced internationals Conor Coady and Kieffer Moore entering the fray for the League One club.

United dominated possession after the restart but struggled to create clear openings against a well-organised defence. Their first shot on target arrived in the 78th minute when Ethan Wheatley forced a save from goalkeeper Dan Ward following Harry Amass’s cross. Ward also denied Shea Lacey from distance as Wrexham preserved their advantage to secure a notable victory.

Pre-Season Context

The result carries minimal competitive significance but offers Carrick an early assessment of his squad depth ahead of the new campaign. United were without several players who featured at the World Cup, including new signing Youri Tielemans. For Wrexham, the triumph provides further encouragement ahead of their second consecutive season in League One.
