Romelu Lukaku will not accept a reserve role at Napoli, his agent Federico Pastorello has warned, casting serious doubt over the Belgian’s future at the Italian club.
Pastorello told Sky Sport Italia that the striker refuses to stay “where he’s not wanted” as he approaches the final 12 months of his contract. The representative’s comments follow statements from Napoli sporting director Manna, who acknowledged this week that discussions are needed once Lukaku returns from holiday.
Injury-hit campaign and contract complications
The forward endured a torrid 2025-26 season, featuring for just 64 minutes due to a serious muscle injury sustained during pre-season. His deal expires in 2027, leaving less than a year to run, and Pastorello indicated that extending terms would carry significant financial implications.
“Obviously not,” Pastorello replied when asked whether Lukaku would accept a squad player position. “He’s an extraordinary player, and he’s proved it. He’s one of the most prolific strikers in the world. It’s hard for us to accept a situation like that.”
The agent suggested that while an initial pecking order might exist, “ultimately it’s what happens on the pitch that decides.” He also referenced potential “financial considerations” behind Manna’s remarks, noting the presence of “two top-class strikers” at the club.
Stalled market and disciplinary tensions
The situation is further complicated by the return of fellow forward Lucca, creating what Pastorello described as a “stalemate.” The agent noted that the transfer market for strikers is currently “completely at a standstill,” which could trigger a “domino effect” once movement begins.
Tensions between player and club surfaced in March when Lukaku remained in Belgium to train individually without Napoli’s consent, infuriating officials. Pastorello defended his client’s actions, suggesting the unauthorised training arrangement might have actually delayed his return to fitness.
“If he had been allowed to stay and train where he wanted, he might have returned sooner and played a leading role at the World Cup,” the agent argued. He added that any contract extension proposal carries “additional costs” beyond wages, and that “the time hasn’t come yet to spread his salary over a longer period.”
Manna is expected to hold crucial talks with Lukaku once the forward concludes his break, with the club needing to clarify whether the striker remains part of their plans or will be permitted to seek opportunities elsewhere.
