Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund has confirmed that defender Sacha Boey will not remain at the club beyond the current transfer window. The French right-back has been informed he no longer features in the Bundesliga champions’ first-team plans.
Speaking following a pre-season friendly defeat to Offenbach, Freund made clear that Boey’s future lies elsewhere. “He’s training with us, but will no longer play a significant role. He has been made aware of this,” Freund stated. The sporting director added that while the defender will continue to train with Vincent Kompany’s squad for the time being, “the plan is for him to take his career to the next level elsewhere.”
Struggles in Bavaria
Since his arrival from Turkish giants Galatasaray in January 2024 for a reported fee of €30 million, Boey has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. The 25-year-old has managed just 38 appearances in all competitions across his spell in Bavaria, contributing one goal and five assists.
The France youth international previously impressed during an 18-month stint in the Super Lig, establishing himself as one of Turkey’s most dynamic full-backs. However, his form failed to translate to German football, prompting a return loan to Galatasaray for the second half of the 2025-26 campaign. This temporary move has not altered Bayern’s long-term stance on the player.
Exit routes under consideration
While Bayern initially preferred a permanent sale to recoup part of their investment, Freund acknowledged that a temporary departure has not been dismissed entirely. “It wasn’t part of the club’s plans, but that no possibility could be ruled out in the transfer market,” he explained regarding a potential loan.
Freund suggested there would be no shortage of interest in the defender’s services. “He’s a player in demand. He’s put in some good performances in Turkey. He could fit into many teams,” he noted, hinting at potential suitors from his former league or other European divisions.
Boey’s departure represents another setback in Bayern’s recent recruitment strategy, with the German champions seeking to offload several fringe players as manager Kompany reshapes his squad. The club’s hierarchy appear determined to trim a bloated roster that has left several established professionals on the periphery.
The defender now faces a crucial fortnight to secure his future before the European transfer window closes. With his Bayern career effectively over after just 38 appearances, Boey must now identify a club where he can reignite the form that once made him one of Europe’s most sought-after young full-backs.
