Schalke have secured the long-term future of defender Mertcan Ayhan, with the 19-year-old centre-back signing a contract extension that commits him to the Gelsenkirchen club until the summer of 2030.
The defender has put pen to paper on improved terms that replace his previous agreement, which was scheduled to expire in 2028. A native of Gelsenkirchen, Ayhan has been part of the Schalke academy system since 2014, progressing through every age group after joining the club over a decade ago.
He broke into the first-team squad last season under manager Miron Muslić, quickly establishing himself as a regular starter in the second tier. Ayhan made 27 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga, accumulating 1,938 minutes as the Royal Blues secured promotion back to Germany’s top flight. His consistent displays have convinced the club’s hierarchy to secure his services for an additional two years beyond his original deal.
Džeko deal edges closer
In parallel, veteran striker Edin Džeko is reportedly close to finalising a new one-year contract with the Bundesliga newcomers. The 40-year-old Bosnian international is currently a free agent following the expiry of his previous terms, though he is expected to complete his return to the Veltins-Arena next week.
Muslić and sporting director Frank Baumann have been determined to retain the experienced forward, who is said to be keen on playing one more season in the Bundesliga. The manager is planning an important role for Džeko as Schalke look to consolidate their position in the top division and establish themselves among Germany’s elite clubs once again.
Final details are reportedly being discussed between the parties, with sources indicating a positive resolution is anticipated within days. The striker took time to consider his various options before leaning towards remaining in Gelsenkirchen.
The twin captures would provide Schalke with valuable continuity at both ends of the pitch. Retaining Ayhan ensures a homegrown defensive foundation for the next five years, whilst Džeko’s anticipated arrival adds considerable top-flight experience to Muslić’s attacking resources ahead of the new campaign.
