Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy has emphasised the importance of his team capitalising on their slender lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings. After three matchdays, Dortmund find themselves ahead of perennial champions FC Bayern, a position Guirassy believes they must exploit.
The 30-year-old striker reflected on the early season advantage, stating, “Of course, it’s very rare. If you look at last year, I don’t think we were ahead of Bayern even once, so it’s something we have to take advantage of,” Guirassy told Bundesliga in an exclusive interview. This sentiment comes after FC Bayern drew goalless against Schalke, allowing Dortmund to establish their early lead.
Guirassy believes that Bayern’s recent stumble against Schalke might not be an isolated incident this season. “They’re a very big team, but they can drop points like they did against Schalke. So it’s up to us to take advantage of that,” he added, underscoring the need for Dortmund to maintain their strong form.
Individually, Guirassy has enjoyed a prolific start to the campaign, scoring five goals since the season began. This impressive tally includes a brace he netted in his 100th appearance for Borussia Dortmund. His goals contributed to a dramatic win over Villarreal, marking a successful start to their Champions League campaign.
Under the guidance of coach Niko Kovac, Borussia Dortmund have shown strong collective form. Guirassy highlighted the team’s current momentum, saying, “We’re in very good form right now. We’re winning games. Personally, it’s very important for me to start my third Dortmund season like this.”
The Black and Yellows will face a significant test at the end of next month when they travel to take on Bayern Munich in a highly anticipated matchday 8 fixture. This encounter will be a crucial opportunity for Dortmund to solidify their position or for Bayern to reclaim ground in the title race.
