Borussia Dortmund have reached a verbal agreement with Genk to sign teenage attacking midfielder Konstantinos Karetsas. The deal for the 18-year-old is reportedly worth €32 million, with the Bundesliga club now set to finalise the transfer following a medical examination.
According to reports, Karetsas will sign a long-term contract running until 2031 once he completes the necessary medical checks. The Greece international enjoyed an impressive campaign in the Belgian Pro League last season, registering 11 assists for Genk while demonstrating maturity beyond his years.
From Belgium Youth to Greek International
Karetsas has established himself as one of the most promising young attacking midfielders in Belgian football. Despite his tender age, he contributed significantly to Genk’s creative play during the recent campaign, showcasing the technical quality and vision that has attracted interest from several top European sides.
Though he previously represented Belgium at youth level, the midfielder has since committed his international future to Greece. He has earned ten senior caps for the Greek national team, scoring three goals, and also featured prominently in Genk’s Europa League run before their defeat to SC Freiburg in the Round of 16.
Dortmund’s Double Attacking Plan
The pursuit of Karetsas forms part of a wider recruitment strategy currently being overseen by sporting director Ole Book. While the first-team squad travelled to Japan for pre-season fixtures, Book remained in Germany to advance negotiations for new arrivals.
He confirmed that the club are actively working to add two attackers to their ranks before the transfer window closes. Alongside the imminent capture of Karetsas, Dortmund have identified Köln’s Said El Mala as their second priority in the attacking department.
The agreement with Genk represents a significant financial commitment to emerging talent for the Black and Yellows. Reports suggest the €32 million fee includes add-ons that are considered realistically achievable, reflecting Dortmund’s confidence in the teenager’s potential to develop into a top-tier contributor.
Should the medical proceedings prove successful, Karetsas will follow a well-trodden path of young prospects using the Bundesliga as a platform for development.
