Yann Sommer, the experienced goalkeeper for Club Brugge, is preparing for an emotional return to San Siro as his current club faces his former side, Inter, in the Champions League. The Swiss international spent three years with the Italian giants, a period he describes as an important chapter in his career.

A Successful Stint at Inter

During his tenure with Inter, Sommer enjoyed significant success, securing two Serie A titles. He was also part of the squad that reached the 2024-25 Champions League final, a testament to the team’s strong performance during his time there. Sommer departed Inter at the end of his contract in June, but maintains that the relationship with the club remains excellent.

Reflecting on his time in Italy, Sommer expressed satisfaction with both his individual performance and the team’s achievements. He highlighted Inter’s consistent position as the best team in Italy during those three years and appreciated their style of play, particularly building from the back. He also mentioned staying in touch with former teammates such as Hakan Calhanoglu and Benjamin Pavard, and spoke highly of current Inter forwards Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram.

A New Project at Club Brugge

Now aged 37, Sommer finds himself involved in a different kind of project at Club Brugge. He explained that the Belgian club operates with a distinct business model, prioritising the development of young players who can gain experience in the league and the Champions League. Despite the focus on youth, Sommer sees it as a great environment for both emerging talents and seasoned professionals like himself.

The veteran goalkeeper affirmed his continued motivation and desire to improve, stating he will continue playing as long as he feels good and can give his all. He also offered words of encouragement for his former understudy and current Inter number one, Josep Martinez, describing him as an excellent goalkeeper with great potential.

Praise for Rising Stars

Sommer also shared his insights on several promising young players, some of whom he has encountered at Club Brugge. He lauded Alessandro Romano, believing Italy made a shrewd move in securing his international services, noting his significant talent.

Furthermore, Sommer singled out Nicolò Tresoldi, confidently stating that he has the potential to become a top European striker. He described Tresoldi as humble, professional, and possessing the qualities needed to play for a major club. While Tresoldi is yet to decide between representing Italy or Germany at senior international level, Sommer refrained from offering advice on the choice, emphasising it is a personal decision.

He also expressed admiration for Pio Esposito, calling him a humble and great individual with considerable power and physicality, representing the new generation of Italian talent.
