Key Takeaways

  • A 47-year-old Nairobi lawyer still turns out for Parklands United every Sunday despite bruised ribs and a torn meniscus.
  • Amateur leagues in Kenya run all year, giving over-40 players no off-season to heal.
  • For many, the joy of playing beats watching; retirement from the pitch only comes when the body completely refuses.

Francis Mwangi woke up last month sure his spleen had burst. A stabbing pain under his left ribs made breathing hard. The night before he had played his first match of the year for Parklands United, a Nairobi amateur side. A clumsy clash with a younger striker left him sore, yet hospital tests showed only bruised ribs.

“At 47 you don’t need a hard tackle to get hurt,” Mwangi laughs. “I can injure myself turning too fast.” Still, he has already sent three WhatsApp messages to the coach begging for a starting spot this weekend.

Kenya’s amateur leagues have no winter break. Games run every Sunday on dusty school pitches. Players in their 40s and 50s arrive with strapped knees, calf guards and enough painkillers to stock a chemist. Yet the dressing-room buzz keeps them coming back.

“Watching Gor Mahia on TV is good, but nothing beats the moment the ref blows the whistle,” says Peter Ochieng, 52, who plays for Dagoretti Lions. “Even if my hip only lets me jog in straight lines, I still get a touch.”

Medics warn that older hobby footballers face longer recovery times. Bruises become weeks of discomfort, and small muscle tears linger. Still, the league secretaries report record numbers of over-40 teams signing up each season.

Mwangi admits his wife rolls her eyes every time he limps home. “She reminds me I ruined our coast holiday when I tore my knee in 2018. But I promised I’ll quit when I can no longer walk to the car.”

Until then, he will keep texting formations to the captain, ice his ribs and lead the team out on Sunday. “The day I stop is the day they carry me off,” he grins. “We go again.”
