Gor Mahia are within touching distance of glory, yet the champagne bottles remain firmly corked. The Kenyan giants occupy top spot in the FKF Premier League with a comfortable seven-point cushion, but their Ghanaian tactician Charles Akonnor refuses to declare the race over.
The former Black Stars boss maintains that mathematics, not emotion, will decide the 2025/26 championship. His nearest challengers, AFC Leopards, trail with 58 points and still have an extra match to play. This gap means the title cannot be secured until the final weeks of the campaign.
“We must stay focused for every single match,” Akonnor stated. “Until the referee blows the final whistle of the last game, we cannot say we are champions. We believe in our ability, but we must continue working hard.”
The coach’s caution stems from recent events at the police service headquarters. Against the defending champions Kenya Police, K’Ogalo found themselves trailing after Brian Chonjo struck in the first half. The visitors appeared destined for a damaging defeat until Assifuah emerged from the substitutes’ bench to fire home an 86th-minute equaliser from close range.
Akonnor praised his team’s mental strength following the rescue mission. He admitted that his side might have lost similar matches in previous seasons. The Ghanaian also singled out winger Ben Stanley Omondi for his energetic display after entering the field.
The tactical battle proved frustrating for the Green Army. Police adopted a deep defensive block after the interval, denying space in the centre of the pitch. “They defended very well inside their own box,” Akonnor explained. “It became extremely difficult to find openings.”
The challenge intensifies this Sunday when Gor travel to face Murang’a Seal. Their previous encounter ended in a thrilling 3-2 victory for the Nairobi club, who had to overcome a two-goal deficit to claim maximum points. Akonnor expects another stern examination of his squad’s title credentials.
With the finish line approaching, the former Wolfsburg captain urges calm heads. He insists his players must avoid panic and maintain their current standards. Three wins from their remaining fixtures would guarantee the 22nd star on the famous green shirt.
