Rayo Vallecano and Girona shared the points in a tense Monday night clash at the Estadio de Vallecas, with a last-gasp header from substitute Cristhian Stuani denying the home side all three points.

The 1-1 result leaves both teams facing an anxious conclusion to the La Liga campaign, though Rayo hold a more comfortable position in the table.

Girona began the match with confidence during the opening exchanges. The visitors moved the ball smoothly across the pitch, yet they struggled to create clear opportunities in the final third. Azzedine Ounahi started as the focal point of the attack, but the absence of regular striker Claudio Echeverri was evident.

The first real chance fell to Girona winger Joel Roca midway through the first half. He intercepted a pass in a dangerous area and rounded goalkeeper Augusto Batalla, only to see his effort blocked by defender Andrei Ratiu.

Rayo grew into the contest as the half progressed. The home side pressed higher up the pitch and forced Girona into mistakes. Jorge de Frutos delivered a dangerous cross from the right flank, and Sergio Camello nearly converted from close range. Minutes later, Camello found himself clean through on goal after Unai Lopez played a clever lofted pass, but Paulo Gazzaniga made a fine save to keep the scores level.

The second period offered more space for both teams. Girona looked dangerous on the counter-attack, with Roca forcing another block and Fran Beltran testing Batalla from distance. However, clear-cut chances remained scarce as the match entered its final stages.

With just five minutes remaining, Rayo appeared to have won it. Substitute Alemao collected the ball on the edge of the area and fired a shot that took a significant deflection. The ball looped over the stranded Gazzaniga and into the net, sparking celebrations among the home supporters who believed their safety was secured.

Yet Girona refused to accept defeat. Manager Michel Sanchez had introduced 39-year-old striker Cristhian Stuani eight minutes earlier, handing him the captain’s armband. The Uruguayan had barely touched the ball when Girona won a late set-piece.

The delivery floated towards the far post where Stuani rose highest above the defence. His powerful header struck the inside of the woodwork and bounced into the net, sealing a dramatic equaliser in the dying moments.

The veteran immediately sprinted to celebrate with his manager on the touchline, embodying the fighting spirit that Girona desperately need in their battle against the drop. The result leaves them two points ahead of Alaves, who occupy the final relegation place.

Rayo, meanwhile, remain six points clear of the bottom three with three matches remaining. Manager Inigo Perez expressed frustration that his side could not hold on for the victory that would have effectively guaranteed their survival.

Girona now prepare for a crucial home fixture against Real Sociedad on Thursday, while Rayo travel to Mestalla to face Valencia.
