Outgoing Italian Football Federation President Gabriele Gravina has suggested placing the country’s referees’ body under external administration. This move would see a special commissioner take charge of the Italian Referee Association until officials elect new leadership.

The proposal follows a period of intense difficulty for the organisation. Authorities have opened investigations into refereeing designator Gianluca Rocchi regarding potential sporting fraud. This probe remains in early stages but continues to expand.

The crisis has already claimed one senior figure. Officials removed AIA President Alfredo Zappi from his duties, though he has launched an appeal against this decision. Legal experts warn this process could take many months.

Gravina believes a temporary special commissioner could implement essential reforms and restore stability during this turbulent period. However, the Italian Olympic Committee must grant formal approval before any external administration begins.

In an official statement, the referees’ association thanked Zappi for his commitment during his time in charge. The body acknowledged it is navigating a “particularly complex and delicate phase” but remains committed to holding presidential elections.

The AIA stressed its main priority is maintaining operational continuity and defending the interests of match officials across Italy. The organisation seeks to protect technical resources and guarantee the regular running of the forthcoming campaign.
