Barcelona have ended their pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez. The club now views this transfer as “practically impossible” due to the high price tag.
The Catalan giants need a new centre-forward this summer. Robert Lewandowski will leave the club, so the team must find a replacement. For many months, Alvarez stood at the top of their wish list. However, the deal has become too difficult to complete.
Atletico Madrid paid €95 million to sign Alvarez from Manchester City two years ago. Now, they want more than €100-110 million for the Argentina international. This price sits far beyond Barcelona’s reach.
Paris Saint-Germain have also entered the bidding war. The French champions see Alvarez as the perfect addition to their attack. With PSG involved, Atletico have no reason to lower their demands. Even if the player asks to leave, the Madrid club can demand top money from the wealthy Paris side.
Because of this, Barcelona have switched their attention to Joao Pedro. The Chelsea forward offers a much more realistic target. The Blues would likely accept a lower fee than Atletico’s massive asking price.
Money problems continue to hurt Barcelona’s transfer plans. The club cannot spend freely while they struggle with financial fair play rules. This limitation makes it hard to build a squad capable of winning the Champions League.
The Spanish giants hoped to pair Alvarez with Ferran Torres in attack next season. Now, they must look for alternative options that fit their tight budget. The dream of bringing the World Cup winner to Camp Nou has faded.
