Spanish coach Xabi Alonso is preparing for a return to English football after agreeing to take charge of Chelsea. The 44-year-old has been without a club since leaving his post at Real Madrid four months ago.
During his time away from the dugout, speculation connected the former Liverpool star with a move back to Anfield. The Merseyside club had identified Alonso as a potential replacement for Arne Slot, who has faced criticism this season. However, the Reds delayed their approach to conduct background checks with Bernabeu officials, which allowed Chelsea to move swiftly.
The West London outfit began discussions with Alonso earlier this week. Following a visit to the club’s facilities, both parties have settled on a long-term arrangement that will see him lead the team for the next four seasons.
Alonso will succeed Liam Rosenior, who was dismissed last month following a difficult three-month period in charge at Stamford Bridge. The board also weighed up the option of appointing former Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez, but ultimately selected Alonso for the position.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid are also preparing for a change in the dugout. Current manager Alvaro Arbeloa is expected to leave after failing to secure silverware during his tenure. Reports suggest Jose Mourinho is ready to return to the Bernabeu thirteen years after his first spell in charge.
