Yoane Wissa has written his name into the record books after firing the Democratic Republic of Congo to their first ever World Cup point. The Brentford forward scored a towering header to earn a 1-1 draw against Portugal in Houston.

The result marks a historic achievement for the African nation. DR Congo, who previously competed as Zaire during their last tournament appearance in 1974, had never before scored at the World Cup. Wissa changed that statistic with a powerful finish just before the interval.

Portugal had taken an early lead through João Neves. The midfielder rose highest to meet Pedro Neto’s cross after only a few minutes, getting ahead of defender Axel Tuanzebe to plant his header past goalkeeper Lionel Mpassi.

Thousands inside the stadium had come specifically to watch Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese captain remained on the pitch for the entire match, but he managed only two half-chances and failed to break down a determined DR Congo defence.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino watched from the stands. He had permitted Ronaldo to play after suspending the final two matches of a three-game ban. However, the veteran striker could not produce the quality needed to secure victory for Roberto Martínez’s side.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka proved vital for DR Congo. The former England defender made several perfectly timed tackles, including a crucial intervention to stop Nuno Mendes when Portugal looked certain to score.

Sébastien Desabre’s team grew stronger as the game progressed. They survived late pressure from Portugal to celebrate a famous result. The defensive discipline shown by the African side frustrated their European opponents throughout the second half.

The draw represents a huge moment for DR Congo. The squad had been forced to prepare in Belgium before travelling to the United States due to restrictions. Now they have a precious point and their first World Cup goal to cherish.
