Kylian Mbappé wrote his name into French football history as he fired the World Cup holders to a hard-fought 3-1 win over Senegal. The French captain netted twice, including a stunning long-range strike in added time, to surpass Olivier Giroud’s national goalscoring record.

The match at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium began slowly for the favourites. Senegal looked dangerous during the opening half, with Sadio Mané causing problems for the French defence. Just before the break, Ismaïla Sarr wasted a clear chance to put the African side ahead, blazing his shot over the bar after good work from Mané.

France returned from the tunnel with fresh energy. The introduction of young playmaker Michael Olise transformed their attack. The Bayern Munich winger twice forced brilliant saves from Senegal keeper Edouard Mendy before setting up the opening goal. On 62 minutes, Olise slid a perfect pass to Mbappé, who calmly slotted home to make it 1-0.

Substitute Bradley Barcola removed any doubt about the result ten minutes from time. The Paris Saint-Germain forward ran onto Adrien Rabiot’s through ball and lifted a delicate chip over the advancing Mendy to double France’s lead.

Senegal refused to give up. Deep into stoppage time, substitute Ibrahim Mbaye hammered a powerful shot past Mike Maignan to give the African champions hope. However, Mbappé had the final word just moments later. The Real Madrid superstar unleashed a thunderous drive from distance that flew past Mendy, securing his 58th international goal and sealing the three points for Didier Deschamps’ side.

The victory sends a clear message to other World Cup contenders. Despite a shaky start, France’s second-half display showed why they remain the team to beat in the tournament.
