Trevoh Chalobah always trusted he would play for England at a World Cup. In the summer of 2018, the young Chelsea defender posted a photo of the trophy online. He wrote that one day he would believe it would happen. He was just 19 at the time and was playing on loan at Ipswich Town in the Championship. That old message now looks very wise.

However, the 26-year-old did not expect the call to come this summer. When Thomas Tuchel named his first squad for the tournament in North America, Chalobah was not on the list. He thought his chance had gone, even after playing 47 games for Chelsea this season.

Everything changed last week. The defender was on holiday in New York City with a friend. He had watched the Monaco Grand Prix the weekend before. Then he visited Cannes on the French coast. He arrived in the Big Apple on Saturday. His plan was to travel to Los Angeles next.

Chalobah did not see the text from Tuchel at first. “I was in Times Square,” he explained. “I went to the shops. When I got back to my hotel, I saw Thomas had sent a message two hours earlier. I was not looking at my phone. I was just walking around.”

The England manager wanted him to call back urgently. “My heart just dropped,” said Chalobah. He knew this was not a casual chat. Soon after, Tuchel appeared on a video call. The manager was smiling. He told the player he had good news. Chalobah was over the moon.

His childhood dream had come true. He quickly shared his old tweet from 2018 again. “It has always been a dream,” he said. “That day I decided to post it. I believed that one day I would make it. This is the biggest moment of my career. I did not expect it now. That is the beautiful part.”

Tuchel had told Chalobah to stay ready when he first picked the squad. Teams can replace injured outfield players up to 24 hours before their first match. England had already beaten Croatia 4-2 in Dallas when Chalobah flew from New York to Kansas City.

The switch has been hectic. The player even gave his football boots away at the end of the season. His sponsors were supposed to send new pairs to Los Angeles for his personal training. He had to speed up the delivery when he got the call.

Chalobah missed England’s hot-weather training camp in Florida. He trained alone at first before joining full team practice on Saturday. Tuchel says adapting quickly is key at tournaments.

“As athletes you always have to be mentally ready,” said Chalobah. “I was switching off and enjoying my holiday. But I have dealt with last-minute changes throughout my career. I know how to adapt.”

The defender has faced hard times before. He had loan spells at Huddersfield and Lorient. Chelsea even took his shirt number away in 2024 and tried to sell him. They loaned him to Crystal Palace instead. The club recalled him in January 2025 because of injuries. He never gives up when people close the door on him.

“I know the player I am,” he said. “I know how far I have come. I cannot let those moments define me. I have faith. In my career, I have always managed to play even when people did not expect it. It starts in training. I give my all and stay ready. I believe I can play a big part at this World Cup.”

Some people have questioned Tuchel’s choice. Livramento is a full-back, but Chalobah is a centre-half. Fans asked why Tuchel did not pick Myles Lewis-Skelly, Lewis Hall or Trent Alexander-Arnold instead. Others mentioned Harry Maguire.

Tuchel had doubts about Maguire’s ability to be an unselfish squad player. He also said in March that Chalobah has better mobility. The plan is for Jarell Quansah to cover at full-back, while Chalobah competes for the right centre-half position.

The manager has trusted Chalobah before. He gave him his Chelsea debut in the 2021 European Super Cup against Villarreal. He also tried to sign him for Bayern Munich in 2023. Chalobah confirmed this: “Yeah, he tried to bring me to Bayern.” Tuchel gave him his only England cap against Senegal last June.

When someone asked if his Los Angeles hotel was refundable, Chalobah smiled. “Yeah,” he said. “I am still trying to get my money back.” Another appearance for England would be worth much more than the cash.
