Jesper Lindstrøm’s proposed transfer to FC Schalke 04 is in serious danger of collapsing despite the Danish winger reportedly completing his medical examination. The Bundesliga club and SSC Napoli remain deadlocked over the structure of the deal, threatening to send the 24-year-old back to Italy.
Negotiations appeared to be progressing positively, with Lindstrøm undergoing medical checks over the weekend following initial agreement between the clubs. However, relations have since soured. Schalke are understood to be frustrated with Napoli over alleged failures to honour verbal agreements, with specific promises reportedly withdrawn after being made.
Clause disagreement blocks progress
The central sticking point concerns the nature of the transfer itself. Schalke are pushing for an option to buy, which would allow them to assess the winger’s contribution during any loan spell before committing to a permanent deal. Napoli, conversely, are demanding a mandatory purchase clause that would oblige the German side to complete the transfer under pre-set conditions.
Schalke’s reluctance to accept binding purchase terms has created an impasse. Unless the Serie A club softens its stance or the Bundesliga side changes its position, the transfer will collapse entirely and Lindstrøm will return to Naples.
Buonanotte lined up as alternative
Should the Lindstrøm deal fail, Schalke have reportedly identified Brighton & Hove Albion’s Facundo Buonanotte as a possible alternative target. The Argentine midfielder would offer a different profile in attack if the Danish move cannot be resurrected.
Lindstrøm now faces an uncertain few days. A return to the Bundesliga had appeared to offer the winger a route back to regular first-team football, but that opportunity now hangs on whether the two clubs can bridge their gap over the financial structure of the proposed arrangement.
