AC Milan defender Zachary Athekame is reportedly on the verge of joining French club Olympique Lyonnais on a loan deal. The move, which is understood to be without an option for Lyon to make the transfer permanent, would see the 21-year-old Swiss international spend the upcoming season in Ligue 1.
The information, reported by RMC Sport, suggests that Lyon’s management successfully convinced Athekame to join them despite interest from several other clubs. His arrival in France is also expected to coincide with the departure of English midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Lyon.
Athekame’s Journey to Milan
Athekame moved to AC Milan last summer from Swiss side Young Boys in a deal reportedly worth around €10 million. His debut season in Italy saw him make 29 appearances for the Rossoneri during the 2025-26 campaign. Despite featuring regularly, he started only seven of those matches, contributing two goals and two assists.
His performances in Italy were considered successful, earning him a call-up to the Swiss senior national team. However, he has yet to make his official debut for his country.
