AC Milan have identified Pierre-Emile Højbjerg as a potential midfield target, though the Serie A club will delay any concrete approach until manager Ruben Amorim has assessed his current squad.

According to Sky Sport, the Rossoneri are monitoring the Danish international, who currently plays for Olympique de Marseille. While Højbjerg’s contract with the French club runs until 2028, Marseille’s financial difficulties, coupled with a need to lower the wage bill, could allow Milan to secure the 30-year-old at a favourable price.

Marseille financial pressures could facilitate deal

The Ligue 1 side’s economic constraints present an opportunity for interested clubs. Højbjerg arrived at Marseille from Tottenham Hotspur and established himself as a regular starter during the 2024-25 season, making 43 appearances across all competitions and contributing five goals and five assists.

His consistent performances have attracted attention from the Italian giants, who are looking to strengthen their engine room. However, Milan’s hierarchy appears unwilling to rush the process.

Amorim evaluation to determine next steps

The club intends to give Amorim sufficient time to evaluate his existing options before committing to new arrivals. Should the Portuguese identify midfield reinforcements as a priority following his assessment, the pursuit of Højbjerg could accelerate rapidly.

The potential transfer carries an additional dimension through Højbjerg’s recent partnership with Adrien Rabiot. The pair played together at Marseille during the 2024-25 campaign, and a reunion at San Siro could appeal to both players.

Højbjerg’s experience in the Premier League with Tottenham adds to his profile as Milan consider their options in the transfer market. Any move would mark a return to one of Europe’s top five leagues for the Copenhagen-born midfielder, who has previously demonstrated his capabilities at the highest level.
