AS Monaco are intensifying their pursuit of Freiburg left-back Jordy Makengo after the 25-year-old French defender agreed in principle to join the Ligue 1 side. The Principality club are now working to strike a deal with the Bundesliga outfit, though financial limitations present a significant hurdle to completing the transfer.
Defensive depth depleted
The recruitment drive stems from an urgent need to replenish the full-back department following a summer exodus. Caio Henrique departed for AFC Ajax, while Kassoum Ouattara completed a move to Besiktas, leaving manager Filipe Luis with limited options on the left flank. Brazilian defender Nazinho currently provides the only specialist cover in that position.
Makengo, who is contracted to Freiburg until 2028, has established himself in German football since joining the club. The 25-year-old would offer genuine competition for the starting role should negotiations succeed, adding experience to a position that has become dangerously thin.
Financial obstacles remain
However, Monaco face a challenging bargaining position. According to L’Equipe, the Monegasque side are reportedly short of funds, a situation that has already slowed their transfer activity this window. This economic pressure complicates attempts to meet Freiburg’s valuation given their strong contractual leverage with the player.
The timing adds further urgency to the proceedings. Monaco commence their Ligue 1 campaign on Sunday with an away fixture against Didier Digard’s Le Havre, leaving minimal time to integrate new defensive personnel. The club must resolve the situation promptly to avoid entering the season with a depleted squad while navigating the constraints of a tight budget.
