Karim Benzema was reportedly close to making an emotional return to Olympique Lyonnais this summer, the club where he began his illustrious career. The Ballon d’Or winner, now 38, had expressed significant interest in rejoining the French side and was even prepared to play without receiving any remuneration, according to reports.
Obstacles to a Homecoming
Despite mutual interest from both Benzema and Lyon’s management, the deal ultimately failed to materialise. A primary hurdle was Benzema’s existing contract with Saudi club Al-Hilal. At the time of the discussions, he had not yet been released from his commitments there, making a move impossible.
Further complicating a potential transfer was Benzema’s role as an ambassador for the Saudi league. This commitment, which reportedly runs until 2030, was another significant obstacle to him joining a club in another country, despite his strong attachment to Lyon.
Benzema’s Lyon Legacy
Benzema rose through the ranks at Olympique Lyonnais, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most promising strikers. During his initial spell with the club, he played a pivotal role in securing four league titles before making a high-profile move to Real Madrid in 2009. His deep connection to Lyon, often referred to as “the club of his life,” made the prospect of a return particularly appealing to fans.
While Benzema has since been released from his Al-Hilal contract, the timing and his ongoing ambassadorial duties meant that a reunion with Lyon this summer could not be finalised. It now appears unlikely that the veteran striker will conclude his playing career at his boyhood club.
