Olympique de Marseille‘s CEO, Stéphane Richard, has issued a stark warning regarding the club’s financial health, stating that the French giants are facing a “risk of survival.” The candid assessment comes as the club grapples with significant economic challenges that have already impacted its squad and on-pitch performance.
Richard, who joined Marseille earlier this year, highlighted the gravity of the situation in a recent interview. He drew a parallel with the fate of Girondins de Bordeaux, a club that has faced severe financial turmoil in recent years, cautioning against the belief that OM is “immortal.”
Financial Straits and UEFA Intervention
The club’s financial difficulties became acutely apparent this summer when Olympique de Marseille faced a considerable risk of expulsion from European competition. UEFA ultimately allowed the Ligue 1 side to participate in the Europa League, but only under the strict condition that their wage bill be significantly reduced. Failure to implement these measures could jeopardise any future European qualification.
As a direct consequence of these financial directives, several key players departed the club. Mason Greenwood, Facundo Medina, Leonardo Balerdi, and Geronimo Rulli were among those who left. Despite these player sales, the funds generated were reportedly insufficient to allow for new recruitment, severely limiting manager Bruno Genesio‘s ability to strengthen his squad.
On-Pitch Struggles Reflect Deeper Issues
The financial constraints appear to be having a tangible impact on the pitch. Bruno Genesio’s side is currently enduring a challenging period, having suffered a four-game losing run across all competitions. This dip in form adds to the pressure on a club already navigating a precarious financial landscape.
Richard did not mince words when describing the club’s predicament. “When you have a business that can lose 50% of its revenue, you can say that it is at risk; it is at risk of survival,” he stated. He further emphasised the sporting implications, adding, “It is also at risk in a sporting sense. We have examples around us… Girondins de Bordeaux. Those who think that OM are immortal because it’s OM are mistaken.”
The CEO acknowledged the widespread concern among fans and stakeholders, stating, “We are worried. I hear that every day. And, ‘So What?’ I am also worried. But you still have to come to the stadium; you still have to support us.” His comments underscore the urgent need for continued support as Olympique de Marseille navigates what he describes as an “ominous” period for the club.
