Germany coach Jürgen Klopp has publicly defended Florian Wirtz, who has faced criticism regarding his recent performances for Liverpool. Klopp confirmed that the talented midfielder will begin Sunday’s UEFA Nations League match against Greece on the bench.
Wirtz’s inclusion in the national squad came earlier than initially planned, following injuries sustained by key players Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz. Despite the early call-up, Klopp emphasised a cautious approach to integrating the 23-year-old into the Germany setup.
Klopp’s Stance on Wirtz’s Development
Speaking at a press conference, Klopp addressed the scrutiny surrounding Wirtz. “His footballing ability is beyond any doubt. He is on a good path, but people are never satisfied with how quickly things happen,” Klopp stated, highlighting the midfielder’s undeniable talent while acknowledging public impatience.
The Germany coach explained his decision to start Wirtz from the bench, stressing the importance of a gradual introduction. “That would certainly be the worst thing we could do right now,” Klopp said, referring to immediately thrusting Wirtz into the starting XI. Instead, he aims to ease Wirtz into the team “with sufficient training time.”
Future Role for Germany
Klopp expressed his commitment to helping Wirtz become a pivotal player for Germany in the coming years. He underlined the need for Wirtz to feel comfortable and integrated within the squad’s tactical framework. “We have to make sure that Flo feels comfortable with us and can fit into what we want from him. With us, hopefully, he can simply be Flo,” Klopp added, referring to the former Bayer Leverkusen player.
