Roma legend Francesco Totti recently revealed he received offers to return to Serie A football at the age of 48, but ultimately rejected them due to his enduring loyalty to the Giallorossi. The iconic former captain, who spent his entire playing career with Roma, disclosed that Como and Genoa approached him with proposals to play again.

The Real Madrid Dilemma

Totti also reflected on a pivotal moment in his career: turning down a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2004. He admitted that while he doesn’t regret his decision to stay with Roma, he believes a move to the ‘Galacticos’ era Real Madrid, featuring stars like David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, and Cristiano Ronaldo, might have led to him winning the Ballon d’Or.

“I’m not repentant about it, but there was a bit of regret,” Totti stated, acknowledging the formidable squad Real Madrid possessed at the time. “I would have won everything there, maybe even the Ballon d’Or.”

Unwavering Loyalty to Roma

Throughout his illustrious career, Totti made 786 appearances for Roma across all competitions, scoring 250 goals in 619 Serie A outings. His dedication to the club earned him legendary status among supporters, a bond he frequently acknowledges.

Explaining his decision to decline the recent Serie A offers from Como and Genoa, Totti stated that his heart and head were conflicted. “My heart and head said two different things,” he revealed, but his loyalty to Roma ultimately prevailed. He emphasised that having worn only one shirt his entire life, he felt it had to remain that way, despite the temptation to return to the pitch.

Totti described Roma as his “home” and spoke of the “incredible story” he shared with the club and its fans, who consistently showed him affection. “People on the street have always shown me their affection,” he added, reinforcing the unique connection he shares with the Giallorossi faithful.
