Former Arsenal and AS Monaco player Gilles Grimandi has offered his perspective on the current football landscape, praising Monaco’s coach Filipe Luís while acknowledging the significant gap Paris Saint-Germain has created in Ligue 1.

Grimandi expressed his admiration for Luís, stating he is “very impressed” by the coach’s impact at Monaco. He noted Luís has brought a positive message and gets his team playing effectively, even against top opposition like PSG. However, Grimandi believes that despite Monaco’s good start, challenging for the Ligue 1 title remains an uphill battle. He suggested that for any French club outside of Paris, a successful season now primarily means securing a Champions League qualification spot.

According to Grimandi, Paris Saint-Germain’s strategic management of the season, including planning to peak in the spring and navigating the post-World Cup period, puts them too far ahead. He indicated that the gap between PSG and other French teams has widened considerably, making it “very, very difficult” for any other club to win the league.

Brighton’s Premier League Ambitions

Shifting his focus to the Premier League, Grimandi made a notable prediction, suggesting that Brighton & Hove Albion could potentially challenge Arsenal this season. He highlighted Brighton’s “very coherent” play, noting their real depth and collective quality. Grimandi pointed to their “remarkable” performance against Arsenal and an impressive display against Crystal Palace as evidence of their capabilities, emphasising that maintaining consistency would be key to their surprise challenge.

A Career Among Legends

Grimandi’s insights come from a career spent alongside some of football’s greats. During his time at AS Monaco, he played with iconic figures such as George Weah and Lilian Thuram. He recalled Monaco’s strong European performances before 2000, including reaching Champions League semi-finals and eliminating Manchester United in a preceding round. Upon moving to Arsenal, Grimandi joined a squad featuring talents like Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, and Dennis Bergkamp, acknowledging the astute recruitment that helped Arsenal close the gap on Europe’s elite at the time.
