AS Monaco manager Filipe Luís has openly addressed his team’s recent downturn in Ligue 1, acknowledging significant performance issues after a strong start to his tenure. The initial ‘honeymoon period’ for the Brazilian appears to be over as the Principality club, once leading the league, has now slipped to seventh place following a winless streak.
Monaco Manager Addresses League Decline
Speaking ahead of an upcoming fixture, Luís admitted that his tactical plan “did not work” during Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Paris FC. This loss marked a continuation of Monaco’s struggles in the domestic league, where they have failed to secure a victory in their last four Ligue 1 matches, recording two draws and two losses.
The Brazilian manager highlighted the need for immediate corrections within the squad. “There are some behaviours that I need to correct,” Luís stated, specifically pointing to issues “especially off the ball.” He indicated that players are aware of these areas requiring improvement, noting that his defensive approach in the Paris FC game differed and left the team vulnerable.
A Stark Contrast in Form
The recent league form stands in sharp contrast to Monaco’s initial success under Luís, who saw his side win their first nine games across all competitions. Furthermore, the team continues to demonstrate strong performances in the UEFA Conference League, suggesting a disparity between their European and domestic displays.
Monaco’s rapid descent from the top of the Ligue 1 table to seventh underscores the challenges Luís now faces. The team’s inability to protect themselves defensively, leading to being “very exposed,” was a key concern raised by the manager following the Paris FC match.
Identifying the Root Causes
Luís also touched upon the youthful nature of his squad, suggesting that sometimes an excess of motivation can be counterproductive. He observed instances where players pressed too aggressively, even when not instructed, indicating a need for greater composure and tactical discipline.
The manager’s focus is now firmly on rectifying these “behaviours” to stabilise Monaco’s Ligue 1 campaign and regain the momentum that characterised the early part of his time at the club.
